Book: Principles of Performance and Control

I authored Principles of Performance and Control as a way to assemble my ideas from both my clinical practice and my time building organizations into a single resource. This book is both easy to understand and succinct in supporting readers towards greater control, greater management over change and adversity, and more effective performance. My portfolio companies are provided with this book to increase the productivity and mental resiliency of both leaders and employees. In many ways, my psychological background informs my daily work in building businesses and this book is meant to answer the question, “How can I [or my team or organization] see more sustainable and effective results?”

In Part 1, I provide a psychology-based overview of anxiety, control, and performance, and how to better understand these concepts. In Part 2, I provide five Principles that are applicable in a variety of contexts.

The outcomes of Principles of Performance and Control are that all individuals (i.e., business leaders, founders, team members, partners, etc.):

  • Understand the psychological basis of anxiety and control: how humans often fall into an avoidance cycle when it comes to confronting the very thing(s) that bring them distress. More importantly, how to navigate versus resist the common experience of anxiety and rebuild a relationship with the anxiety itself.

  • Understand ineffective control styles: how and when they surface, and ultimately their potentially negative impact on the team members, surrounding systems, and relationships in general.

  • Understand the key components of establishing an adaptive and effective sense of control: humans have the capability of fostering control within their interactions and their lives in productive ways. Principles of Performance and Control introduce four paramount steps.

  • Learn how effective control positively correlates with improved performance.

  • Walk away with a sound understanding of the Five Principles that allow for adaptive management over adversity and anxiety and create sustainable performance in all realms of life.

Effective performance and productivity are often the goals in our personal and professional lives. Change/adversity often create disruption in reaching and maintaining successful performance. The adoption of sound principles allows for greater focus, less wavering, and ultimately a professional and personal life that feels more adaptively controlled.
